Insider Guide to Florence
The Amalfi Coast in Italy is considered by many to be the most beautiful stretch of coast in Europe. The towns all have great restaurants, luxury hotels, shopping boutiques and sunset views.
Where to Stay
Many of the best hotels on the Amalfi Coast have spectacular ocean views because they are perched atop the sheer cliffs that Amalfi is famous for. Here are some great hotels to stay at:
Hotel Santa Caterina
Le Sirenuse
Palazzo Sasso Hotel
Hotel Raito
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is located in Sorrento where you can spend the night before taking the ferry to Positano or Amalfi.
When To Go May to October. May, June and September are less crowded, but August can have the best weather.
Getting There
The nearest airport is Capodichino Airport in Naples. From Naples you can either drive, take the train to Salerno, or ride the bus service which connects all of the various towns in the province.
In the summer months (May to October), Amalfi, Positano, Salerno, Capri, Naples and Sorrento are connected by ferry or hydrofoil. Co-ordinate your arrival with your hotel since they can meet you down by the water taxis, ferry or bus stop. If you prefer it, some hotels can arrange a car service to pick you up at the airport. This is by far the easiest method of travel, but it is also the most expensive.
Vacation Tips
If you are spending your vacation on the Amalfi Coast, you can take a day trip to the island of Capri. Be sure to check the ferry schedule carefully so you don't miss the last boat off the island. On most days, the latest ferry departs Capri at 8pm.
What To Bring
Not much. Too much luggage can make ferry trips difficult, especially if you plan on making several stops on your vacation.
