Arizona Vacation: The Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Written by VacationIdea.com Travel Editors.
The oldest arboretum and botanical garden in the American Southwest, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a 320-acre collection of desert plants located at the foot of the Picketpost Mountain near Superior, Arizona. The arboretum is about one hour east of Phoenix and 90 minutes from north Tucson, making it a great getaway from both cities.

The arboretum includes two miles of walking paths, 3,200 different desert plants, and more than 230 species of bird and 72 terrestrial species. The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a great bird watching spot.

On your walk through the arboretum, you will pass beautiful gardens, including the Hummingbird-Butterfly Garden, Desert Legume Garden, Cactus Garden, Curandero Trail, Wing Memorial Herb Garden, Eucalyptus Forest and Demonstration Garden. The beautiful displays provide an exciting learning environment for kids and grown-ups alike.

The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm (from 6am to 3pm during the summer season), except December 25. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $3 for ages 5 to 12; children under age five are admitted free. For more information and to plan your Arizona vacation, call 520-689-2723.
