Restoration of Michelangelo's David

Written by VacationIdea.com Travel Editors.
Michelangelo's David, one of the most famous statues in the world, is located in the museum Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy. The restoration of the statue will take approximately 7 months, until March 31, 2003.

Visitors to the museum will still be able to view Michelangelo's David since the restaurers will use a specially designed aerial platform.

The statue of David portrays the ancient hero who killed the fierce opponent Goliath by using a simple slingshot. Michelangelo sculpted David as he would have looked before the fight, with a slingshot over his left shoulder, standing tall and focused. The statue was completed around 1504 and put on display in front of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. It was later moved to Galleria dell'Accademia to protect it from rain and vandalism.
