Adventure Vacation at Reserva Amazonica

Written by VacationIdea.com Travel Editors.
Why Go
Reserva Amazonica is an adventure vacation lodge in the rain forest of Peru. Located on a 40-square-mile private ecological reserve, Reserva Amazonica has been hosting guests since 1978.

Rooms & Suites
There are 30 private cabanas and 3 suites built with local materials in native style. Each bungalow is raised on stilts and has a steeply pitched, thatched palm roof, a terrace with two hammocks, a single bedroom with large windows, mosquito nets and a private bathroom with filtered water.

Remember this is an adventure vacation so the rooms have no electricity or hot water (with the exception of the three Amazonica Suites which have solar heated showers).

Where to Eat
A two-story wooden pavilion houses the dining room, bar, the main lounge and a mezzanine with rainforest views.

Typical dishes include juane (chicken with steamed rice cooked in banana leaves), ají de castaña (Brazilian nut purée) or paca (fish or chicken cooked inside fresh bamboo stalks set in a circle around a bonfire), as well as pitchers of refreshing drinks made with boiled water and flavored with local fresh fruits.

Vacation Activities
Reserva Amazonica is ideally located for a wildlife watching adventure vacation. Spot different wildlife species, ranging from giant macaws, to toucans, parrots, tapirs, owls, the Southern Amazon Red Squirrels, as well as a large variety of monkeys.

How to Get to the Hotel
Daily commercial flights connect Puerto Maldonado with Lima (a two-hour flight time) and Cusco (35 minutes). Once you reach the Puerto Maldonado airport, take the Reserva Amazonica bus to the city's river port, and then take a outboard motorboat to Reserva Amazonica lodge. It is about an hour-long canoe ride (15 Km. or 9 miles) downriver from Puerto Maldonado.

Rates at Reserva Amazonica start at $120 per person per night, including all meals and guide services in English or French. To book, visit www.inkaterra.com.
