New York City Attraction: Merchants' Gate

Written by VacationIdea.com Travel Editors.
Located in Columbus Circle at Central Park South and Central Park West, Merchants' Gate is one of the four main entrances to Central Park along Central Park South. It features the colossal Maine Monument, a public plaza with stone benches, and pedestrian entrances to the Park. There is also a snack bar with seating just inside the Park.

Maine Monument, erected in 1913, features a gilded bronze sculpture set on top of a massive 44-foot limestone base with a fountain and figures portraying Victory, Peace, Courage, Fortitude, and Justice. The monument commemorates the sinking of the battleship Maine in 1898.

The plaza at Merchants' Gate features a colorful bluestone and granite pavement. There is a marble wall behind the monument, and several benches arranged in a semi-circle.
