The Spanish Steps - A Lively Meeting Spot

The area around the Spanish Steps is one of the most busy sections of Rome. In addition to the main attraction - the famous steps extending from Piazza di Spagna to Trinita dei Monti - this area offers designer shops, restaurants and bars.
The square Piazza di Spagna at the base of the steps was originally named after the Spanish Embassy located in the square. The concept for the Spanish Steps originated in the 17th century by the owners of the French church Trinita dei Monti who wanted to connect the church with with the square below.
The square at the bottom of the Spanish Steps contains a beautiful fountain in the shape of a small boat, called the Barcaccia. Visitors and locals alike gather around the fountain and you may even have to climb the stairs to view the fountain. The square also contains designer shops and bars.
Vacation Tip:
Many people walk to the top of the Spanish Steps for a view of Rome. If you, however, ascend a little higher to the entrance to the church Trinita dei Monti, you can enjoy even better views of the whole city.
